The F70 designation points to a minimum yield strength of 70 ksi (485 MPa), which gives these flanges more toughness and load-bearing capacity than lower grades in the series.
The chemistry of A694 F70 is held to controlled limits, usually carbon up to 0.30%, manganese up to 1.60%, silicon from 0.15 to 0.35%, and phosphorus and sulfur each capped at 0.025%. Small additions of nickel, chromium, molybdenum, vanadium, or niobium may be used to reach the required strength, with the carbon equivalent generally kept below 0.48 for good weldability. That balance gives the flange high strength without making it hard to fabricate.
Grade F70 flanges offer a minimum tensile strength of 82 ksi (565 MPa), a minimum yield of 70 ksi (485 MPa), and elongation of at least 18% in 2 inches (50 mm). Those numbers suit service at elevated pressure and temperature, where resistance to deformation and fracture matters. The material has good impact toughness and can be supplied in a range of heat-treated conditions to fit the job.
A694 F70 comes in the full set of flange types, including weld neck, slip-on, socket weld, blind, threaded, and lap joint. Sizes run from 1/2 inch up to 48 inches and larger, in pressure classes from 150 through 2500. Facings include raised face, flat face, and ring-type joint, made to ASME B16.5 or MSS SP-44. These flanges are used in natural gas transmission pipelines, subsea systems, offshore platforms, refineries, and high-pressure water or steam lines.
The high yield strength lets designers use thinner wall sections in pipelines, which trims weight and material cost while keeping safety margins in hard service. Surface treatments such as galvanizing or coating can add corrosion protection where the environment calls for it.
