Built by ASTM A694, the F42 grade carries a minimum yield strength of 42,000 psi (about 290 MPa) and a minimum tensile strength of 60,000 psi (415 MPa). That strength lets the flanges take strong internal pressure and external load without deforming or letting a joint fail. They connect pipeline segments, valves, pumps, and pressure vessels, holding a leak-free seal across large distribution systems.

The metallurgy and heat treatment are set for long life, good weldability, and toughness. The flanges are forged from killed steel with controlled carbon, manganese, and silicon, often with micro-alloying additions for a fine, uniform grain. That structure raises impact resistance, so the flanges hold up under continuous vibration, pressure surges, and cyclic thermal expansion. To reach their final properties, the forgings are heat treated by normalizing, normalizing and tempering, or quenching and tempering, which relieves internal stress and lowers the risk of brittle fracture in hard service.

Reliable sealing under high pressure puts ASTM A694 F42 flanges into energy and infrastructure work. Long-distance oil, natural gas, and petrochemical transmission pipelines use them, along with high-pressure municipal water distribution systems. Their strength also suits offshore drilling rigs, refinery processing loops, and industrial pumping stations, where fluid containment has to hold under changing workloads.
