Nickel Alloy Flanges | ASTM B564 | UNS N02200
PM Industries manufactures, supplies, and stocks Nickel flanges for piping systems that handle aggressive chemicals where stainless steel and carbon steel give out. Most of these flanges are made from commercially pure nickel, either Nickel 200 (UNS N02200) or its low-carbon grade Nickel 201 (UNS N02201). They hold a tight, leak-free seal in high-integrity lines and resist reducing chemicals, halogen gases, and strong caustic alkalis. The standout property is resistance to sodium hydroxide. Nickel flanges handle caustic soda at every concentration and temperature, even when the medium is fully molten. The high purity of the metal also keeps them free from chloride stress-corrosion cracking, a failure mode that ends the life of many other alloys in harsh plants.
Nickel flanges perform well far below and far above room temperature. Nickel 201 carries a restricted carbon content that resists graphitization at high heat, so it keeps its strength and ductility up to 1200°F (649°C). At the cold end, both grades stay tough. Their face-centered cubic structure holds up in cryogenic service down toward absolute zero without turning brittle under thermal shock. The metal conducts heat and electricity well and has low vapor pressure. Shops machine and weld it with standard methods, including gas tungsten arc (GTAW/TIG) and gas metal arc (GMAW/MIG) welding, to form strong permanent joints.
The two grades differ mainly in carbon content. Nickel 200 caps carbon at 0.15% and serves well up to 600°F (315°C), while Nickel 201 caps carbon at 0.02% and is the better pick above that point because its lower carbon reduces the risk of graphitization. Both grades carry a density of 0.321 lb/in³ (8.89 g/cm³) and are ferromagnetic at room temperature. They give excellent resistance to caustic soda and other alkalis, good resistance to hydrochloric, sulfuric, and phosphoric acids in non-aerated conditions, and excellent resistance to hydrofluoric acid and dry halogens. Oxidizing salt solutions and nitric acid are not recommended.
PM Industries supplies nickel flanges in the styles your line calls for, so you can match each flange to its joint and pressure rating. Weld neck, slip-on, blind, and socket weld styles are stocked, and other configurations such as lap joint, threaded, and orifice flanges can be produced to order. Flange material is supplied to ASTM B564 and ASME SB564 for nickel alloy forgings, with dimensions to ASME B16.5 and ASME B16.47. Other national and customer standards are available on request.
